AIKO onboard data processing suite

PROJECT SUMMARY

Traditionally, satellites have beamed mountains of raw data back to Earth for processing. But with the growing capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a paradigm shift is underway. The AIKO onboard data processing suite aims to enable new features to process images and data directly onboard of the satellite, with real-time analysis from SAR processes to cloud detection.

PROBLEM WE SOLVED

Downlinking massive datasets from space is time-consuming and expensive. AI algorithms running directly onboard a satellite can analyze data in real-time, identifying critical information and compressing the rest. This not only reduces bandwidth requirements but also enables faster decision-making.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

Imagine a satellite equipped with AI that can recognize wildfires in their early stages, or detect oil spills as they occur. Onboard processing allows for real-time analysis, enabling satellites to trigger immediate alerts or even adjust their observation schedules autonomously.

The potential applications of onboard AI processing are vast. From environmental monitoring and disaster response to scientific discovery and resource exploration, AI-powered satellites can revolutionize how we interact with and learn from space.

AIKO Onboard Data Processing (OBDP) is a comprehensive suite of algorithms that enables several features autonomously. The suite leverages AIKO's space heritage and is designed to be compatible with various hardware and infrastructure configurations. Currently, the suite consists of algorithms for:

  • Cloud segmentation
  • Object detection
  • Change detection
  • SAR focusing
  • Super resolution
